A couple of conversations with Jeff and with John Goold raised a point to discuss. Should the cylinder oil feed connection enter the steam pipe at the steam loop close to the superheater as it was on early cars or is it better to put it in at the other end of the steam pipe near the cylinder block as it was on condensing cars?

There is a school of thought which says that oil put in at the very hottest part may be cooked and go through the engine as smoke to make a blue haze behind the car. Moving it back to the cooler part of the pipe would help to avoid this but would the dispersion of the oil into the flow of steam be inferior?

I have found that putting the oil into the steam pipe at its connection with the steam chest to cause it to tend to pass through to the exhaust'unused',appearing as droplets at the outlet of the exhaust. When put in at a point 12" outside the burner the exhaust pipe outlet was just 'oily'. I suspect that there is an optimum position determined by flow rate of steam and its temperature, both of which are variable.
