The difference between the wet and dry engine is: The earlier dry Stanley engines had a dust cover wrapped around their crankcase and the engine had to be hand lubricated about every 50 miles. Access was through sliding doors on the dust cover's sides and also by removing the rear copper cover to lubricate the differential.
In 1909 Stanley came out with first their wet engine. The 1909 20 hp model U engine now had an oil tight dust cover that oil was retained in and lubrication was done by the crank throws splashing the oil about the crankcase. By 1910, even their 10 hp engines had now gone to the wet engine. Also added in 1910 was an engine baffle plate located just 4 " behind the stuffing boxes and sealed to help keep condinsate from the stuffing boxes out of the engine crank case.
