Hi Darren,

I think this is the 1910 40hp White owned by the Coles brothers who lived in Leeds,

regards, Jeff.

No doubt of it - I remember this car from the West Riding Road Safety Rallies of the mid 1950's. The back of the bodywork was shaped like a tourer but looked a bit home made and had no upholstery. It seemed a troublesome beast at the time and more like a lorry than a car - I wonder if it still exists?

This car was originally a 20hp White steamer.
It is either a 1907 Model "H" or a 1908 Model "L" like mine. It is very difficult to tell between these cars as they were identical in many ways. One really needs a side view to identify it more accurately. HTe side view of this car does not help!

A 30hp car would not have the water tank behind the bonnet infront of the dash but underneath the floorboards -as would all the 1909 and 1910 Whites.
The 1906 cars have a narrower condenser rim visable.

It was stated to me that the Coles car was a 30 hp car. I think that they believed that it was. I took some pictures of it in the Caister Castle Museum some years ago and I am sure that it started life as a 20hp 1907 White Model "H" but I believe that it has a 30hp engine fitted - I was denied access to the engine at the time. Anyway the car was quite a mess and needed a total extensive rebuild after some detailed research to check its true identity.
