I've had an enquiry from Nottingham County Council libraries department, compiling a list of Nottingham built cars. Has anyone heard of the Vapomobile? Built in Nottingham around 1900. 1901, it was a steam car built by an offshoot of MMC. Any information at all would be appreciated.

Alun,

The vapomobile was a light steam car very much on American lines, although the makers claimed that it was of entirely English contruction, and much stronger than its American equivalent. One model, the 12hp, certainly used an American Mason engine; there were three models in all, the 5 and 7hp cars having tiller steering, and the 12hp wheel steering. Built by the Motor Construction Co. Ltd. Nottingham 1902 - 1904

Further information.

In 1903 the makers used both American and English engines, quoting a higher price for the latter

There are adverts for four of these cars on The Steam Automobil.com Archive website. See pages 8 and 9 of Summer 1963 issue which show models No 1 and No 2 and pages 12 and 13 of the Winter 1963 issue show models No 4 and No 5.

Various options were offered; condensers, mud guards, hoods, New York Tyres, etc.

The Vapomobil No1 'Light 2 Seater' cost 140 Guineas and the No5 'De-Luxe' cost 416 Guineas
