Lost 10hp Stanley

Hi All,

I am trying to trace the whereabouts of a 10hp Stanley for a friend of mine at Beamish Museum. We believe it was supplied new by Galloways of Gateshead and its registration number starts with an X and is something like X 2135. It was sold at auction 2 or 3 years ago but we don’t know where it went – it may even have gone abroad.

Please find attached a photo of the car

Don

Hi Don,
The car had now gone to Germany under the ownership of a Mr Karl-Heinz Rehkopf. He took the car to the Melle steam car tour 2011(see the steam car October 2011, No.53 P.9). George.

I have found the 2 key references:

Steam Car Developments and Steam Marine <otors Vol XV October 1947-Marcvh 1948 nos 193-198, pages 531 to 535, "Adventures with a 10 HP "Stanley" steamer of 1911 Vntage, by Leonard Taylor.

Deccribes the car and its history. Interestingly, I have a number of letters from several of the steam car enthusiats mentioned in this article, which came with our Model 607.

The Veteran and Vintage Magazine Nov 1963 Vol 8 No 3 p78 "Nails and Steam Cars" by Meryvyn Brown.

Story of Stanley agents Galloways of Gateshead, with photo of the Galloway Brothers in X-2135.

Peter,

Would you be able to make PDFs of those articles & email them? I'm really interested and don't have access to those issues. In the picture of the Galloway Brothers & X-2135, is it in the 2-seat configuration shown in the 1949 Silverstone picture?

Attached is another early picture of a car, from Steam Car Developments and Steam Aviation of June, 1934. It looks much like the 1949 Silverstone picture, but is AL-6125, which now also seems to have a rear seat and 4 doors. I've been having trouble getting these two cars sorted out.

Here is the British Pathe Catalogue reference to the film clip in which X-2135 apears

The Pathe News website www.pathenews.com has a newsreel which shows this car, amongst others, at a rally in Bristol about 1950.

Clip ref:

2306.05 VETERAN CAR RALLY (1:16:16:00 - 1:17:06:00)

And the Sharpe Collection Christies Auction 2005 catalogue page is still live here, withe more article references.
