Steam Car Photographs in the Beamish Collection


I have obtained copies of a number of Steam Car photographs from the Beamish Museum archives and they have kindly let me reproduce them here. I would welcome your comments on them and hope that some of you may identify the make and possibly model of these steam cars. I will post the information that Beamish have on the photos plus my comments. Here are the first three.

I would say this is a 10hp Stanley –Don

The house where Grace Darling was born at Bamburgh Northumberland.
The car is a Stanley (steamer) of c1905.

I would say this is a Model F Stanley its registration number is CN 30 which is
a Gateshead registration, this car was most lightly supplied by Galloway of Gateshead

Side views of 1903 steam car registration number J826 belonging to the Coates family of Willington.

J 826 registration is a Durham registration number, I don’t know if this number is correct as it’s the same as that on a different car in a later photograph – Don

A 1903 White steam car registration number CH 21 with rear entrance tonneau body, which possibly belonged to the Richardson family (of the Leatherworks in Newcastle), believed to have been taken in the Rye Hill area of Newcastle, pre 1910.

CH 21 registration is a Derby registration number, this was more than likely issued in the county where the car was bought new i.e. from the agent - Don

This number may have been swapped onto the car in the earlier photos as they were both owned by the same person - Don

The car in the first post No.46149 still survives in the Hull Museum of Street life. It was originally owned by a Colonel Compton who was well known in motoring from 1901 onwards. He added the home-made condenser to the car. The car is therefore a 1901 White model A/B.
The first car in the second post No.73872 & 73873 is a circa 1900-1902 Gardner Serpollet, probably a model A 6HP.

Be interesting to see if this actually a mis-spelling of Crompton - if so owner was the electrical and road steam pioneer Colone REB Cormpton - [en.wikipedia.org]

By the way I did ask if Beamish had any archive material relating to the Stanley Dealers Galloways, but drew a blank.

Here’s another Steam Car photograph from the Beamish Museum archives.

It depicts the 10hp Stanley registration number X 2135 which was supplied new by Galloway’s of Gateshead.

It is interesting to note that my 10hp Stanley has a windscreen (windshield) very similar to the one on this Stanley, this and the front doors would be Galloway fitments, and possibly the five spoke steering wheel.

Great to see another photo of this car - and from almost precisely the same angle as the shot in the Christie'd auction listing.

Another Galloway touch may be the single headlamp - as on the ex-E W Kendrew / John Liming roadster.
