We're on Pre War Cars website - have a look , it was the headline article on Aug 11th and if you can answer their question there is a facility to comment.

Nice reference to our Club and an interesting question to answer - why is it that, given the UK's huge interest in all things steam, this country never made a production steam car, other than the license built Turner Miesse, possibly some Serpollets assembled in York and the odd Clarkson?

Hi Mike,
How about the Morriss and the Pearson-Cox?
Best Wishes

Several more makes have now been added to the list on the Pre War cars site but the fact seems to be that no UK make achieved significant production levels. One could of course say the same about Germany.

I would say that only Stanley, White, and Serpollet (until his early death) could be seen as succeeding in commercialising a steam car. All the rest were dreamers, no hopers or outright crooks, some fitting all three categories!

Mike,

In which one of your three categories would you put Doble?

I have often wondered why in the US, steam cars where relatively popular, yet they moved over quickly to IC tractors from traction engines, while in the UK we stuck with traction engines till after the war and steam cars never got of the ground!

I couldn't possibly comment!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be kind I would say mostly the first. Brilliant pursuit of a dream over many years mostly at someone else's expense and hardly a successful business.
