Thought I would take the front hubs on the Stanley 607 down for regreasing before the season, and found the Drive's side inner bearing (last regreased 2 years ago) in poor shape, little grease left. slight pitting on race in wheel hub, rollers rust marked and inner race stuck on axle stub. I've attached some photos - is the inner race still useable?
Another query, the Passenger side inner race just slid off the stub axle, should it have been a tighter fit? It has been rubbing on the dust seal plate.
More info - compared the damaged race wiht the undamaged one on the Passenger side, the cage on the damaged race has far more axial movement and shake on it than the undamaged one.
Also found the inner races jam up against a fillet on the stub axle.
Still have to get the stuck race off, that's next week's job.

Yes it is knackered!
The "oil seal" seems to be an "O" ring and is probably not keeping the grease in and grit out - can you modify to incorporate a lip type oil seal or even a felt seal which would tolerate grit more readily?
The inner race of the bearing should be spaced away from the fillet radius of the stub axle with a suitably machined spacer.
Lastly the end float of the roller bearings is best controlled by a tapered tubular spacer between the two inner races so that the stub axle nut can be tightened up and split pinned, with a very slight nip of the races. (I'm not sure what nip is desirable so you'd best find that out) The method of relying on an internally keyed washer behind the stub axle nut to engage with a keyway on the stub axle is very common but adding a tubular spacer makes a much sounder job, that is if there is enough space to get the spacer in!
