My summer choir is rehearsing a setting of Robert Herrick's poem, "To Music - To Becalm His Fever". I've slowly come to realize that, with startling prescience, Herrick was actually writing about the carbon that I've been cleaning out of branch forks, when he wrote -

Thou sweetly canst convert the same
From a consuming fire
Into a gentle licking flame,
And make it thus expire.
