To appreciate the problems of making a modern steam car visit the forum of the Steam Autmobile Club of America. Many brains are occupied with this problem but the probability of building one with economy any where near that of ic engined vehicles is still remote.

In theory the emissions of even a vintage steam car can be fairly clean owing to low combustion temperature reducing the output of nitrous emissions however the plain fact is that CO2 emission, which is what really concerns the world, is very closely related to the amount of fuel consumed which in a steam car is large. It is also very difficult to make a steam car burner (which has to respond to wildly fluctuating heat demand) burn as cleanly as an oil fired domestic heating system which runs steadily at a constant output.
But if you want entertainment - nothing beats a steamer!!
